The Science Behind Lume Paint

Lume, short for luminous paint, is a phosphorescent material that absorbs light and then gradually re-emits it, allowing watch hands, dials, and markers to glow in the dark. Originally, radium-based lume was used in early 20th-century watches, but due to its radioactive dangers, safer alternatives were developed—most notably Super-LumiNova in the 1990s.

Super-LumiNova, a non-radioactive, strontium aluminate-based compound, is now the industry standard. It charges when exposed to light and gradually fades over time, providing essential visibility for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Why Does Lume Matter?

For divers, pilots, military personnel, and outdoor adventurers, a readable watch in low-light conditions is essential. Even for everyday wearers, lume ensures that checking the time at night—whether in a dark theater, on a late-night drive, or during an early morning workout—is effortless.

Types of Super-LumiNova and Their Performance

Not all lume is created equal. Variations in color, brightness, and longevity affect how well a watch glows:

  • C3 Super-LumiNova – The brightest and longest-lasting lume, emitting a green glow.
  • BGW9 Super-LumiNova – Glows blue in the dark but has a slightly lower brightness than C3.
  • Old Radium Super-LumiNova – A vintage-inspired lume with a yellowish tint, offering a more classic look at the cost of reduced brightness.

Additionally, lume comes in different grades:

  • Standard – The most basic, with shorter afterglow times.
  • Grade A – A step up in brightness and longevity.
  • Grade X1 – The highest quality, offering the longest glow duration.
